VMX2020: How technology can drive preventive pet care

This year at VMX, our parent company, Mars Petcare, will be hosting a session about new technologies and tools that can advance preventive care in veterinary practices and strengthen the relationships between veterinarians and pet owners.

Our biomarkers research and pet obesity insights have been instrumental in the development of some of these tools, which aim to promote proactive pet health and wellness.

Join leading veterinary professionals at the world's largest veterinary conference, as they present how behaviour analysis, genetic testing and AI-driven diagnostic tools can help owners and veterinarians get early insights into our pets’ health and develop more efficient care plans.

PET INSIGHT PROJECT: Unlocking insights into why a pet’s behaviour may indicate health issues by using a smart device for early detection.

Aletha Carson DVM, Senior Manager at Kinship Digital Health, will lead a conversation about how our pets’ behavior has hidden insights into their well-being. In the past two years, the team at Pet Insight Project have quantified and analysed over 10 million days of behavioural information from over 90,000 dogs using Whistle FIT monitors to capture those behaviors and help determine how they relate to our pets’ overall wellbeing. Dr Carson will also share new discoveries about the early identification of health issues including dermatologic (skin) disorders via monitoring of a dog’s round-the-clock behaviour, including sleep patterns, scratching habits and barking using the Whistle FIT smart collar.

WISDOM PANEL: Identifying genetic health conditions that patients may face in their lifetime by analysing a small DNA sample during a puppy’s first veterinary visit.

Angela Hughes DVM PhD,Global Science Advocacy Senior Manager at Mars Petcare, will show how this canine DNA test is providing new insights for veterinarians into the specific health needs of dogs through the extensive ancestry and genetic health screening for more than 150 conditions. She will also share findings from the large-scale integration of Wisdom Panel™ Health genetic testing into the Banfield® Pet Hospital Puppy Optimum Wellness Plans® which has tested 200,000 puppies in just over a year, including 5% who have actionable health insights identified in their DNA.

RENALTECH™: Predicting which feline patients are progressing toward chronic kidney disease up to two years prior to clinical diagnosis by leveraging AI in a first-of-its-kind tool.

Jennifer Ogeer DVM, VP for Medical Affairs at Antech, will share background on the first-ever predictive tool in veterinary medicine that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict whether a cat will develop chronic kidney disease – a disease that affects 30-40 percent of cats over the age of 10 – two years before typical clinical diagnosis offering new avenues for monitoring and treatment to improve cats’ health and well-being.
