Student Opportunities

From open days to placements, we're delighted to be able to offer a variety of opportunities for students.

Virtual Open Days

Are you studying a STEM subject and interested in using your degree in a career with a global, family owned company where every day, thousands of associates (employees) all work towards one purpose: A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS
A company that uses science and data to discover insights into pet health and wellbeing? One driven by principles and guided by our caring approach to science?

If the answer is yes, and you'd like to find out more, then you're invited to attend one of our virtual open days.

Join us for an hour for a presentation followed by a Q&A session. You'll have the chance to meet a diverse range of associates across a variety of roles, find out what life is like at Waltham and see what roles your degree could lead you to.

Our virtual open days are held twice a year in around March and October. They are held via Microsoft teams and details will be advertised on this page closer to the time.

Placement Opportunities

When we can, we offer placement for Undergraduates and Postgraduates at the Institute. You will be able to experience what it is like to work in a global, privately-owned company, whilst being given responsibility, freedom, and a chance to enhance your scientific and business skills.

Typically, we have two assignments formats, shorter summer placements (typically 3 – 6 months) and industrial placements (12 months).

Industrial Placements (12 Months)

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer 12 month placements to start in September 2022.

Animal unit focused placements

These involve providing the care and training for our pets to enable them to participate in our research programme, whilst also generating high quality scientific data through our caring science approach. The placements are for second year Undergraduate students, studying an animal related course, and typically run from September to September.

We will advertise these placements on this page when available.

Ask an Insider
Kathryn, Industrial placement student 2018-2019 returned to Waltham as a pet trainer after completing her degree. Ask her a question about her experiences at Waltham or her new role here.

Research or laboratory focused placements

These placements are for students to work on a specific research study and are dependent on the availability of suitable projects. As these projects tend to have technical and functional knowledge, there may be specific course requirements. The placements are for second year Undergraduate students and typically run from September to September.

We will advertise these placements on this page when available.

Summer placements

Occasionally, we have summer placements available. They are usually based in our research or laboratory teams and involve working on a specific research project. We may stipulate a course requirement for these placements as they tend to require certain technical and functional knowledge.
These placements are open to Undergraduates or Post Graduates in relevant scientific disciplines at any stage in their studies (unless specified otherwise). These placements are dependent on project availability.

We will advertise these placements on this page when available.
