New published research examines the role strong bonds between older adults and their pets in maintaining physical and cognitive health

A recently published study, supported by Waltham Petcare Science Institute - Pet Attachment and Maintenance of Physical and Cognitive Function – suggests closer bonds between people and their pets may help support healthier ageing, slowing down both physical and cognitive decline.  

These findings are especially important given the increasing ageing population we are facing globally – and the need for practical interventions that promote healthier ageing. So, understanding factors that may slow down physical and cognitive deterioration warrant further investigation. And pet attachment, which was largely unexplored before this study, offers potential benefits that could be applied in aging interventions. 

 

How to scientifically measure ‘emotional attachment’

 

Pet attachment measures how emotionally connected or bonded someone feels to their pet. For example, whether the person considers their pet a member of the family or, as a source of support. It can be measured using the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale (LAPS) – with this particular study exploring the relationship of pet attachment to changes in physical capability (such as 400-meter walk time, gait speed) and cognitive function (such as memory, language and executive function). 

 

Key findings from this research were:  

  • Higher attachment to pets can be associated with slower physical decline and cognitive function in ageing adults – and different types of pet may have different relationships to rates of decline
  • Dog owners with higher attachment exhibit slower deterioration in attention. However, they may experience faster decline in memory recall
  • Cat owners with higher attachment report better perceived maintenance of physical wellness as they age. 

 

This is the first longitudinal study examining how pet attachment influences the rate of decline in physical and cognitive functions among older adults. It used a cohort design with data from 214 pet-owning adults aged 50-100, part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA). Participants' physical and cognitive functions were assessed over 13 years through a range of tests.  

Its findings complement previous studies which have indicated potential mental health benefits from Human-Animal Interaction (HAI), including reduced stress and loneliness. It is also another step forward in Waltham’s goal to advance the science of the human-animal bond in service of the Purpose: A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS.
