Science behind the brands
WALTHAM® is the source of authority and credibility underpinning all Mars® pet care brands.

Our research in areas such as skin and coat health, energy requirements, immune health, dental health, the human and animal bond, and digestive health is incorporated into our global pet care products and educational communications. Combined with our unique understanding of the dietary needs of different breeds and life stage of pets, our knowledge enables us to offer effective diets for pets everywhere.
In addition to supporting our mainstream brands, we also help to drive the Mars® pet care business’s market leadership in clinical diets to treat particular diseases. For example, our research into Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease, which affects around 4 million cats worldwide, led to the development of the only product designed to treat two of the most common types of bladder stones that can form in cats.
The extent of our research can be seen in the funnel diagram (Figure 4), which shows the vast amount of work behind our antioxidant programme. This is just one of the many pieces of science used in
our Royal Canin Skin Support diet. Different aspects of our work are communicated via a system of icons often found on Royal Canin products.
